Description

Tin-glazed earthenware painted in blue, green, yellow and red with Chinese figures and vases of flowers

Buff earthenware, thrown, tin-glazed and painted in blue, green, yellow, and red. Circular with deep curved and sloping sides, standing on a footring. The interior is painted in blue with a central floral spray surrounded by seven groups of four dots. The outside is painted in polychrome with Chinese figures bending forward alternating with vases of flowers. Round the upper rim there is a border of sgraffito scrolls in a blue ground.

History note: Unidentified vendor in a village near Saffron Walden; Mr Bird of Saffron Walden from whom bought for £1.10s.0d. on 12 March 1913 by Dr J.W.L. Glaisher, FRS, Trinity College, Cambridge
