Description

Four earthenware fragments, all with a cream slip incised under a yellow glaze, B and C enhanced with areas of brown glaze

Wheel-thrown earthenware bowl fragments, body tone ranging from reddish to dark brown, coated with cream slip incised under a yellow glaze, the patterns enhanced with areas of brown glaze
A:
Shape: Footring base and section of a convex lower body
Interior: cream slip coating under a yellow glaze. On the base two roughly incised concentric circles frame a tripartite pattern enhanced with brown glaze. The body bears the lower part of a group of incised lettering, with a splash of brown glaze to the left.
Exterior: Yellow glaze over a cream slip, speckled with many small brown dots, running onto the footring. The exterior of the footring is unglazed.
B:
Shape: Triangular fragment of a carinated conical bowl with straight sloping sides.
Interior: cream slip coating under a yellow glaze. On the upper body two incised double lines frame a frieze of double outlined patterns or pseudo lettering on a ground of spiralling lines. Two double concentric lines incised on the lower body frame part of a similar pattern.
Exterior: Yellow glaze applied thinly over a cream slip without decoration, the body bearing pronounced rill marks from throwing.
C:
Shape: Fragment of a carinated conical bowl with straight sloping sides.
Interior: cream slip coating under a yellow glaze. Two double concentric lines incised around the base frame a pattern on a ground of spiralling lines. On the upper body two incised double lines frame a frieze of repeated scrolling split palmettes on a ground of spirals.
Exterior: Thin layer of yellow glaze applied directly to the body without a slip, undecorated
D:
Shape: Quadrilateral fragment of rim and upper body of a straight-sided bowl with collared neck.
Interior: Yellow glaze applied directly to the body without slip, undecorated
Exterior: Yellow glaze over a white slip, with glaze pooled on rim, slip absent on neck. Below, a band of incised double lines frame the top of a pattern of lettering and decorative elements carved in relief, on a ground of spirals.
