Description

Three earthenware fragments, all with cream slip incised under a yellow glaze, enhanced with areas of dark brown and green underglaze pigment

Wheel-thrown earthenware bowl fragments of reddish body tone, coated with cream slip incised under yellow glaze, the patterns enhanced with limited small patches of dark brown and green pigment
A:
Shape: Fragment, with foot ring, base and section of a carinated lower body
Interior: Yellow surface colour produced by a cream slip coating under a yellow glaze, a splash of dark brown pigment in the centre of the base. On the base a four-part interlocking pattern of abstract floral and angular motifs over a background of scribbled spirals is framed by a deeply incised concentric circle.
Exterior: Undecorated yellow glaze thinly applied over a cream slip, pooling under the carination and running over onto the foot ring. The underside of the foot ring is unglazed.
B:
Shape: Fragment of a vessel with conical walls
Interior: Yellow glaze over a cream slip. The lower part of a group of incised calligraphy is visible, with small circles incised between selected uprights. Patches of green and brown pigment used to highlight selected areas.
Exterior: Plain undecorated yellow glaze over a thinly applied cream slip
C:
Shape: Fragment of a vessel, with part of upper body and flanged rim
Interior: Cream slip coating incised under a yellow glaze. The flanged rim is decorated with a band of scrolling vines and split palmettes over a background of scribbled spirals, while the upper body bears two six-pointed rosettes reserved on a circular carved background, each enclosed within an incised circle.
Exterior: A thin layer of yellow glaze applied over a thin cream slip, undecorated
