Description

Red earthenware coated with white slip and decorated with incising and applied reliefs coloured green and yellow.

Red earthenware, coated with white over underlying dark brown slip with decoration incised through the former, and applied reliefs coloured green and yellow. Round the top is an applied wreath of oak leaves and acorns. Below this is a series of scenes: a man shooting chamois, two peasants, a trooper and a halberdier in seventeenth-century costume, and a grotesque squatting figure stretching his mouth with his fingers. Below these scenes are the names 'Joh: Martin Labhardt' and 'von (?) Peter Hermann Langnau. The lower part is encircled by an alpine scene with a chalet and a man and woman driving cows, goats, and swine; above a wreath of vine; below, a row of formal flowers. The base is encircled by acanthus leaves in relief. The circular lid is concave with a central hole, surrounded by an inscription: 'Zwischen heut und morgen, liegd eine lange Frist drum lerne schnell besorgen da du noch munter bist' (Betwixt today and tomorrow lies a long space, therefore learn to speed on your task whilst still you are lusty).
