Description

Slipware dish decorated with a couple taking tea and the date 1840

Reddish-buff earthenware, thrown, coated on the front with dark brown slip, decorated with an incised design painted in green, yellow, white and brown, and with chattering on a white slip under lead-glaze. Circular, with a flat centre, steeply sloping sides and an outward-slanting rim. In the middle is a tea-table shaped like a goblet, on the right of which a woman is seated on a ladder-backed chair with a leaf-shaped bush behind it, and on the left, a man stands facing towards the woman with a small tree behind him. The woman wears a brown dress, a white fichu round her neck and a white cap. The man wears a yellow high-crowned hat, a green jacket, brown pantaloons and yellow shoes. Below them there is a rectangular area of horizontal and vertical lines over green and yellow, perhaps representing grass. Below, in white slip, is the date '1840'. At the top of the sides here is a band of white sip with five rows of chattering over it. The outward sloping rim is decorated with ten groups of white slip strokes of different lengths, separated by ten of three brown strokes. The exterior of the sides is glazed, and the base unglazed.
