Description

Earthenware with applied decoration, coated in a white slip and a colourless glaze painted with dark red and green.

Earthenware, mould made with applied decoration, coated in a white slip and a colourless glaze, painted over the glaze in dark red and green.
Shape: hollow lion figurine with collared legs and a wide, gaping mouth. Applied decoration comprises facial features, elaborate plaited mane, tail and rosette on the chest. A circular spout is present on the rear right flank and a wide mouth on the face, both indicative of the use of this object as a pouring vessel.
Exterior: the rosette on the chest is painted green, above which a dark red floral design sprouts towards the mouth. Facial features, mane and tail are highlighted with green and dark red over-glaze paint. Flecks of the over-glaze paint are visible over the body. Glaze and slip run over the lower legs and feet, terminating unevenly.
Interior: partially slipped and coated in glaze, otherwise undecorated.
