Description

Deep press-moulded earthenware dish coated in cream slip and slip trailed in two shades of brown with a two-handled vase filled with flowers, four birds above, and initials I S below, and lead-glazed

Buff earthenware, press-moulded over a hump mould to produce a design in low relief on the interior, and scalloped round the edge with a tool or knife, coated inside with cream slip, and slip-trailed in brown and dark brown under yellowish lead-glaze. The reverse is undecorated. The inside is decorated with a two handled skirted pot or vase filled with stylized sprays of flowers and leaves, with four birds, perhaps peacocks in the spaces above, and below, two S scrolls and the initials' I S' .
