Note

Altenburg is situated on the border between West Saxony and Thuringia in eastern Germany. Stoneware was being produced there by the third decade of the seventeenth century and in 1667 six master potters were recorded. This tankard illustrates the light tan colour typical of Altenburg stoneware during the first half of the eighteenth century, much of which was decorated with applied white rosette prunts, and various motifs made of tiny pellets of clay pressed into the surface , known as Perldekor.
