Description

Maiolica dish, painted in polychrome with The Goddess Latona and the Lycians.

Dish. Earthenware, tin-glazed overall; the reverse off-white and tinged with green on the left side. Painted in blue, green, turquoise-green, yellow, orange, black, and white.
Shape 79 with deeper sides. Circular with shallow curved sides, standing on a low foot.
The Goddess Latona and the Lycians. The goddess reclines on a rock beside a tree, accompanied by her two children, Apollo and Diana. To the right three Lycians stand up to their waists in water, and a fourth dives down to the bottom, his legs raised above the surface. On the right there are two trees, and in the distance, a lake and buildings on islands. A bird flies from left to right across the sky. The rim is yellow. The back is inscribed in the middle in dark blue: `la dea tona/1542' (the goddess (La)tona). Single yellow bands encircle the foot and outer edge.
