Description

Earthenware, coated on the front in cream slip, and decorated with slip-trailing in reddish-brown, dark brown and cream under yellowish lead-glaze: a rampant lion surrounded by a trellis border, broken by a panel enclosing the name and date, 'RALPH TOFT 1676'

Pale red earthenware, thrown, coated on the front with cream slip, slip trailed in brown and dark brown, 'jewelled' in cream slip, and lead-glazed. The reverse is undecorated. Circular with a wide, sloping rim, and well with deep curved sides and flat central area. The well is occupied by a vigorous rampant lion with five trefoil plant motifs and a wavy leaf in the spaces around it. The dark outlines of the lion and other motifs are 'jewelled' in cream slip. The rim is decorated with a trellis in two shades of brown, broken on the lower edge by a 'jewelled' panel enclosing the name and date: ' RALPH: TOFT 1676' in dark brown slip.
