Maker: Unidentified Montelupo pottery
Earthenware, tin-glazed on both sides; the reverse tinged with green; the base partially glazed. Painted in greyish-blue, green, yellow, orange, and manganese.
Shape 67 with warped rim.
Four stems, each bearing a large leaf and two fruits, curve over the surface with smaller leaves and spirals in the spaces. The rim is bordered by concentric bands: a broad blue and three narrow manganese, a blue and a reserved white with blue dashes over them, two manganese, and a green. The back is decorated with three pale manganese concentric bands situated midway across the sides.
History note: Purchased in *Craon ? Alley, nearly opposite Christie's*, London, for 13s.0d. on 19 March 1924 by Dr J.W.L. Glaisher, FRS, Trinity College, Cambridge

Dishes decorated with leaves and fruit (see also C.2176-1928, C.193-1991 and C.9-1914) are typical of the attractive but summarily painted pottery made in Montelupo for a popular market during the seventeenth century.
