Potter: Unidentified Staffordshire Potter
Earthenware dish, slip coated and slip trailed under lead-glaze, with a crowned king's head flanked by stylized flowers, within a garland, and surrounded by a border of interlaced curving lines
Dark buff earthenware, thrown, coated with cream slip on the interior, slip-trailed in dark ochre and dark brown, 'jewelled' in cream, and lead-glazed; the reverse is undecorated. Circular with a slightly convex sloping rim, deep curved sides and flat centre. The well is decorated with a bewigged and crowned king's head,flanked by formal floral motifs springing from a garland comprising two striped sausage-shaped motifs separated by three diamond-shaped motifs below the head. The outlines of all 'are jewelled' in white slip. On the rim are two interlacing brown and dark brown wavy lines with cream' jewelling' on the dark brown. Two suspension holes are bored through the rim at the top when the head is the right way up.
History note: Lady Harvey, 19 Marsefield [sic] Gardens, South Hampstead, N.W.; on moving to Scotland sold her collection en bloc to Mr Stoner from whom her slipwares were bought for £650 on 17 June1912 by Dr J.W.L. Glaisher, FRS, Trinity College, Cambridge.
