Description

Tin-glazed earthenware painted in blue and manganese-purple with a Chinese man in a garden and a rocky landscape

Pale buff earthenware tin-glazed and painted in blue and manganese-purple. The kettle has a globular body standing on a low circular foot, a straight-sided upward-tilting spout, and a handle of D profile arching over the cover, which is of low domed form with a central knob. On one side of the body there is an oval panel with a Chinese figure seated in a garden, and on the other, a rocky landscape painted in the style of late Ming porcelain. On the front below the spout, and on top of the cover there are stylized fan-like leaves, and the handle and spout are striped. A border of U-shaped motifs encircles the shoulder and the area immediately above the foot.
