Description

Tin-glazed earthenware jug painted in blue, yellowish-green, yellow, and manganese-brown with Diana and a Nymph in an oval medallion framed by flowers, and surrounded by floral sprays and garlands

Buff earthenware, thrown, with an applied handle, tin-glazed, and painted in blue, yellowish-green, yellow, and a little manganese-brown. The jug has a bulbous body, a wide cylindrical neck with a small lip, and a harp-shaped loop handle of D-section with a kick at its lower end. The top of the handle is pierced by a circular hole to take a pewter mount and thumbpiece for a cover. On the front is an oval medallion framed by a blue band and a border of flowers and foliage, in which the goddess Diana, is seated on a rock in front of a tree beside a small pond, while one of her nymphs replaces her sandals. The rest of the body is decorated with sprigs and larger posies of blue and yellow flowers and foliage, and on each side of the neck there are two garlands with a spray of flowers suspended between them. Two yellow horizontal lines encircle the top of the neck. The handle has flowers and leaves down its back and alternating blue dots and trefoil leaves down its two sides. On the base, painted in yellow is the mark C o over L underlined.
