Description

Tin-glazed earthenware stand for fruit painted in blue

Buff earthenware, moulded, tin-glazed and painted in blue. The rounded lozenge-shaped dish has a wavy edge, steep fluted sides and a flat centre. It is supported on four dolphin-shaped scroll supports rising from a shallow flat-topped base of the same outline. The dish is decorated inside with a central lozenge-shaped motif, and round the edge with a border of lambrequin type with scrolls, daisy-like flowers, and foliage. The exterior has a narrower border below the rim. The supports have comparable decoration down their backs and the edges of the base have eight separate motifs of the same type. A letter G with a slanting stroke below it is painted on the underside of the dish.

Note

This stand is similar to two in the Historisches Museum, Basel (inv. nos. 1911.1739 and 1983.340) attributed to the Hannong factory in Strasbourg. It would possibly have stood on a Surtout, a large stand for the centre of a table on which dishes for fruit and containers for condiments were arranged (same museum, 1911.1738). The factory was founded by Charles-François Hannong (d. 1739) and was continued by his son, Paul Hannong (d. 1760) who with his brother Balthazar had been associated with his father since 1732.
