Description

Tea cannister with screw top, tin-glazed earthenware painted in blue imitation of Chinese porcelain of the reign of Kangxi

Pale buff earthenware slab built with applied screw, tin-glazed and painted in blue. Rectangular with straight sides and flat top, in the centre of which is a cylindrical screw for a cap, now missing. One flat side is decorated with two standing Chinese ladies and one seated in a chair in a garden with an awning beside a tree and a fence in the background. On the other side one woman stands on the right beside a screen and a tree with clouds above, and another, who holds a fan, is seated on a chair beside a table. In the foreground there are small plants and a rock. The two short sides are decorated with three lotus flowers on waving stems of foliage, and on each of the shoulders there is a lotus flower and foliage. The screw is blue.

The Metal Pot (De Metaale Pot) factory operated between 1670 and 1775. The mark LVE on the base of this tea cannister was the mark of Samuel van Eenhoorn proprietor of the factory between 1691 and 1724.
