Production: The Ewer Factory
Tin-glazed earthenware painted in blue with a scroll-edged panel containing a man and woman in a landscape
Pale buff earthenware, moulded, tin-glazed, and painted in dark blue. The vase is of octagonal pear-shaped form with compressed sides, standing on an octagonal foot which is concave underneath. The front is decorated with a panel edged by relief scrolls, enclosing a landscape with a man standing on the right beside a tree, playing a pipe to a lady who sits on the ground in front of him. On both sides there is an area of scale pattern, rocks and stylized plants, and on the back, an inverted spray of simplified foliage. A border of Greek Key pattern runs round the edge of the base. One of a pair.

The Ewer Factory (De Lampetkan) operated between 1609 and 1811. The initials LPK or LP Kan for Lampetkan were used from c. 1752 until the factory closed in 1811. During this period the factory was directed by the widow of Maarten van der Ceel from 1752-1778 and by Abraham van der Ceel from 1778-1808. This vase and its pair probably made between about 1765-1800.
