Description

Maiolica dish, painted in blue with the muse Erato, playing a long horn.

Dish. Earthenware, tin-glazed pale greyish-blue overall; the glaze on the reverse is thinner than on the front and unevenly applied. The glaze on the front has crazed. Painted in blue.
Shape approximately 68 with shallower sides. Circular with shallow curved sides turning outwards at the rim, standing on a footring.
The muse Erato, playing a long horn, sits facing to the right on a rectangular block, inscribed on the left side `SL' [on top of each other] and `1618' with an arrow pointing upwards. The name `+ ERATONE' is inscribed to the right of her. A wreath of leaves encircles the rim.

Notes

History note: Probably Sotheby's, 2 May 1864, lot 143; sold to Wareham. Perhaps Marquis d'Azeglio; Paris, Hôtel Drouot, 16-17 March 1868, Catalogue de faïences italiennes et autres ainsi que d'objets d'art et de curiosité . . . formant la collection de M. le Marquis d'Azeglio, lot 87.
