Description

Tin-glazed earthenware painted in blue on the outside with two panels each containing two Chinese figures in a landscape in late Ming style, and inside with the date 1671

Buff earthenware, thrown, tin-glazed overall, and painted in blue. The bowl stands on a footring and has deep curved sides which expand towards the rim. The exterior is decorated with two rectangular panels separated by areas of blue ground with a reserved pale blue cross-shape with blue spots on the arms, and a half flower at the top and bottom of the vertical arm. The panels each contain two Chinese figures in a landscape in late Ming style. Inside at the bottom there are two concentric circles enclosing the date 1671 with a squiggle above and below. Below the rim there is a horizontal band with eight trefoil leaves pointing downwards.
