Description

Tin-glazed earthenware painted in blue. The four-sided plaque has a moulded a border of baroque scrollwork in relief, with the inside of a large shell at top centre, the back of a smaller shell at bottom centre, and the back of an even smaller shell at the middle of each side. It is painted with an outdoor scene, described in an inscription below: 'Stiers wreetheijt gepleegt aan meester en vrouw een wonderlijk bestier tot verlossing hunner kint geschiet tot zerdam 1647' (Bull's savage assault uipon its master and his wife; a strange contrivance for the delivery of their child; took place at Zerdam 1647). In the foreground, a man is being overthrown by a bull, and a woman is tossed in the air, her child falling to the ground; to the left, a boy is flying a kite, and a crowd of men attack another bull on the bank of a mere.

History note: Rt. Hon. Montague Frick Lord Swaythling; Christie's 8 May 1924, The Swaythling Heirlooms, sold by order of the Trustees of the Rt. Hon. Montague Frick Lord Swaythling deceased being part of the Swaythling heirloomslot 57; sold for 23 guineas (£24 3s) to Frank Partridge, bidding on behalf of Dr J.W.L. Glaisher, FRS, Trinity College, Cambridge.
