Description

Tin-glazed earthenware painted in blue with animal hair bristles

Earthenware, moulded, tin-glazed, and painted in blue. The oval back is convex on the upper side. The flat underside is pierced by rows of holes into which bunches of bristles are inserted and held in place by adhesive. The top is decorated with seven nude infants playing amidst foliated and floriated foliage against a dark blue ground

Notes

History note: Sotheby's, 27 January 1921, Catalogue of Porcelain and Pottery, lot 101, described as 'an unusual piece' purchased by 'Arthur' (?Heyman/Hesman) the porter on Dr Glaisher's behalf for £7.15.

Techniques used in production

Moulding : Earthenware, moulded, indented with shallow holes on the flat side, tin-glazed on the upper surface, and painted in blue; bunches of bristles are inserted into the indentations and fixed there with adhesive, probably animal glue of some kind
