Unidentified Delft factory (Production)


Tin-glazed earthenware dish decorated with a bust of William III flanked by tulips and a border of tulips and other flowers and foliage

Earthenware, moulded, tin-glazed and painted in blue, yellow and sage-green. Circular with a wavy edge, wide gadrooned rim, and deep fluted sides, standing on a footring. In the middle is a half figure of King William III wearing a crown and armour, flanked by tulips, with the initials 'W R' above. On the rim are similar tulips alternating with other flowers on a continuous stem. Inscribed on the base within the footring, 'No .50'.


History note: Christie, Manson & Woods, 3 December 1901, part of lot 201 purchased for 8½ guineas by Mr Stoner; bought from Mr Stoner for paid 10% more by Dr J.W.L. Glaisher, FRS, Trinity College, Cambridge.
