Description

Tin-glazed earthenware dish decorated with a long bust of Mary II with M R for Maria Regina surrounded by a wreath of tulips and other flowers and foliage

Buff earthenware, moulded, tin-glazed, and painted in blue, green, and yellow with dark blue outlines, The glaze is rather speckly. Circular with a wavy edge, gadrooned rim, and deep well, standing on a footring. In the middle is a half-length portrait of Mary II, wearing a crown, a necklace, and a dress with an indecently decolleté neckline, from which her breasts protrude, in an unseemly manner. On either side of her there is a curving stem bearing a stylized yellow and white tulip and below her, a yellow bud. The initials M and R are placed to left and right of her head.
