Description

Maiolica bust of a woman, painted in polychrome.

Earthenware, tin-glazed except for the base. Painted in greyish-blue, green, yellow, orange, and a little manganese-purple. Frontal bust of a woman truncated below the breasts.The woman has auburn hair elaborately dressed with ribbons and a diadem.She wears a necklace of large orange beads, and her yellow and green gown is draped across her body exposing the left breast. On her right shoulder is a projecting ring with the ends of the fabric drawn through it.

History note: Probably purchased in July 1918 from Delany (or Dulany); H.S. Reitlinger (d.1950); the Reitlinger Trust, Maidenhead, from which transferred in 1991.
