Description

Fritware painted in black and blue under a clear glaze

Buff fritware, wheel thrown, painted in blue and black under a clear highly crazed glaze.
Shape: flanged rim with a slightly flaring profile, descends via a collar and carination onto a pear shaped body sitting on a moderately high foot ring.
Exterior: black concentric bands, on the rim and neck collar, enclose a frieze of lozenges, on the neck, that are outlined in black with their interior coloured in blue. On the shoulder, a frieze of blue a repeating “V” shapes is painted in black against a blue background. On the central body, a cable pattern, defined in black with a blue centre containing a black flower head, is painted against a background of small black crosses. The cable frieze is delimited on the upper and lower body by two friezes of Arabic (cursive) inscriptions painted in reserve against a black background. Scrolling water weeds, painted in black, protrude from the lower inscription. Glaze runs unevenly of the lowest section of the body and onto the foot ring. At one point on the cable a scar probably results from contact with another vessel in the kiln,
Interior: the rim is painted in black, otherwise it is undecorated.
