Description

Fritware with a white glaze and lustre decoration

Buff fritware, wheel thrown bowl with yellow-brown lustre decoration over an opaque white, crazed glaze.
Shape: conical bowl with plain rim and foot ring.
Interior: painted in lustre, small crescent shapes above a concentric line decorate the rim area. The central decoration, painted in reserve against a lustred background, depicts a seated male figure with a beard, wearing a headdress and spotted gown and holding a mace in his right hand. The background is covered with a scrolling vine with palmette leaves.
Exterior: Rim is decorated with a band of lustre and below it, occupying the body of the vessel, is a repeating pattern of interlaced arabesques. The crazed glaze extends down the exterior to a mid point on the foot ring.
