Ornament with Bird Whistle

Slip-coated earthenware streaked with manganese-brown under lead-glaze

Red earthenware, covered with white slip and streaked with manganese-brown under yellowish lead-glaze. A large bird resembling a pigeon is perched on a conical base from which project two horizontal perches with four smaller birds upon them. The pigeon's tail is pierced to form the mouthpiece of a whistle or hooter.


History note: Jolley's, Cambridge, from whom bought in 1901 or 1902 with a pair for 35 shillings (£1.15s.0d.) by Dr J.W.L. Glaisher, FRS, Trinity College, Cambridge

The origin of this ornament is uncertain, but comparable examples have been attributed to Halifax in Yorkshire.
