Description

Frtiware painted blue and black under a clear glaze

Buff fritware, body is wheel thrown with neck and rim moulded, painted both painted in black and blue under a clear crazed glaze.
Shape: mouth is moulded into the form of a cock’s head with strap handle, symbolising tail feathers, attached at the back and on the upper body. Body is a bulbous pear shape sitting on a low foot ring.
Exterior: rim and neck are painted in blue and black imitating a cock’s head including head feathers, mouth and eyes. On the body three smaller friezes, comprising blue or black vertical lines or black dots, frame a central frieze of vertical panels. The panels contain, alternately, either a black cable pattern with a hatched background, or a black palmettes and dotted semi-ovals, painted against a blue background. Glaze ends uniformly on lower body just above foot ring.
Interior: rim is painted black and there is a splash of black colouring in the mouth. The mouth and neck are glazed.
