Production: Wedgwood I, Josiah (Possibly)
Red dry-bodied stoneware, thrown, with applied handle, spout, and knob, and engine-turned decoration. The pear-shaped pot stands on a circular spreading foot. It has a straight sloping spout, and a loop handle with vertical reeding on its exterior. The high domed cover has a narrow border, and an applied cone-shaped knob pierced by a ventilation hole. The body, the middle of the spout, and the cover are decorated with wavy horizontal bands of engine-turning with groups of five vertical lines at intervals. On the base here is an impressed imitation Chinese seal mark incorporating a W in its lower half.

Red stoneware tea and coffee ware with decoration executed with a rose and crown lathe was introduced by Josiah Wedgwood in Burslem about 1764-5, and was also produced by other north Staffordshire potters, such as William Greatbatch, and the Foley Pottery in Fenton. The W in the imitation Chinese seal mark might indicate that the pot was made by Wedgwood but there were other potters in the area whose name began with W. A tea bowl and saucer in the Victoria and Albert Museum (2601 & A-1901) is similarly decorated and has an oval imitation Chinese mark incorporating a W.
