Description

Fritware painted in blue and black under a clear glaze

Fritware, probably wheel thrown, painted in blue (which has run into surrounding areas) with black outlining, under a clear, slightly crazed glaze
Shape: hemispherical bowl sitting on a small, narrow foot ring
Exterior: flying birds in a landscape containing hillocks from which sprout leafed stems, adorned with occasional flowers, and tendril like cactus leaves. One bird, identical to that on the interior, is standing on a hillock. A pair of black concentric lines marks the upper and lower edges of this decoration. Glaze covers the body, pooling slightly on the exterior foot ring and covering the underside. The rim and edge of the foot ring appear unglazed.
Interior: on the rim a frieze of scrolling curls painted in reserve against a blue background, enclosed within two concentric lines. On the base a standing bird is depicted within a rocky landscape contained within two linear roundels.
