Production: Unidentified Staffordshire factory
White salt-glazed stoneware with applied reliefs of squirrels and plant motifs
White stoneware, thrown, with applied handles and moulded reliefs, and salt-glaze. The bell-shaped goblet stands on a high spreading foot, and has two handles, each formed by an applied strip with a projecting volute at the top and bottom. On each side there are asymmetrically placed reliefs of squirrels, fleurs-de-lys, bunches of grapes, acorns and sprays of flowers, partly connected by coiled threads of clay corrugated by transverse impressions.
History note: Puttick & Simpson, 25 June 1915, lot 151; one of two bought for £9 by Mr S. Fenton on behalf of Dr J.W.L. Glaisher, FRS, Trinity College, Cambridge; the other goblet was given by Dr Glaisher to Mrs W.D. Dickson of Bourneouth
