Description

Tin-glazed earthenware dispensing pot.

Buff earthenware tin-glazed. Of albarello form with uneven, bulging sides.

Notes

History note: Probably James Smith, Whitechapel, London; the number 12 in the inscription on the pot may refer to its lot number in Sotheby, Wilkinson and Hodge's sale of 1901. Record of donation not found, 1981. It is possible that the pot was acquired by Dr Glaisher at the James Smith Sale among a box of fragments he records having bought, and was later bequeathed by him as part of his collection in 1928, rather than having been donated by an unknown person in in 1901.
