Fritware coated in grey slip, painted in white slip and black under a clear glaze
Buff fritware, probably wheel thrown, coated in a grey slip with decoration painted in white slip outlined in black under a clear glaze
Shape: carinated bowl with slightly everted rim sitting on a wide, moderately high foot ring. Body is not symmetrical and sits at a slight angle.
Interior: rim is painted black. On the body, a concentric band encloses decoration comprising two prancing asses painted against a black hatched background containing leaves and flowers. Except for the hatched ground, all decoration on the body is painted in white slip and outlined in black, with black detail in the form of dots on the animals, or petals and veins on the foliage.
Exterior: black paint continues on the rim. On the neck a calligraphic band on a black hatched ground is enclosed above and below by concentric bands, all painted in white slip and outlined in black. Radiating from two black concentric lines on the lower body, regular lotus petals in white slip with black outline contain black dotted lines. Glaze runs slightly unevenly over the lower surface to a point on the foot ring. The underside of the foot ring is also partially glazed.
