This is the earliest known plate bearing the name of a Cambridge College. Bartholomew Fuller, the outside caterer or cook of Trinity College was a common councillor of the town corporation, leased land in the nearby village of Little Wilbraham in 1763 and 1769, and took on an apprentice in 1768. His death was recorded in the Cambridge Chronicle for Saturday, 7 April 1770 as having taken place 'On Sunday last'. The relief lettering around the rim was moulded at the same time as the plate, showing that Fuller must have placed an order with the factory, either in person or through a local shopkeeper. Inscriptions painted in enamel-colours could have been applied to any plate in production, and not necessarily in the factory.
