Description

Earthenware coated in a brown slip painted brown and turquoise under a yellow glaze

Buff earthenware, wheel thrown, coated in a light brown slip, painted in brown and turquoise under yellow, slightly crazed glaze.
Shape: thickly potted, plain rim and straight neck descending via a carination onto a conical bowl that sits on a low, wide foot ring.
Interior: rim is painted at regular intervals with dashed lines, while on the neck triangles outlined in brown contain lozenges with a turquoise central dot. On the body, a radiating pattern of curvaceous vertical panels is contained between two horizsontal friezes comprising brown crosses. The panel design alternates between a brown zigzag line, contained within vertical lines and delimiting turquoise dots, and brown crosses. On the base, a roundel contains brown semi-ovals with turquoise dots around an unglazed central area. Three scar marks on the lower body indicate the use of a tripod stacking device in the kiln.
Exterior: on the neck, a frieze of brown triangles contains turquoise dots. Glaze covers the surface to a mid-point on the lower body, while the brown slip covers the surface to the foot ring.
