Description

White stoneware, slip cast, and salt-glazed

Slip-cast white salt-glazed stoneware teapot in the form of a crouching camel , and cover with lion knob

White salt-glazed stoneware, slip-caste with integral relief decoration, applied moulded handle, spout and knob. The oval lower part of the body has the hind legs of the camel outlined in relief on either side of the twice notched loop handle, and its tall upright spout has an open-mouthed camel's head at the end. The upper part of the body is in the form of a hexagonal container resting on the camel's back. The hexagonal cover has a recumbent lion knob. On one side of the lower part, a man in eighteenth-century costume holding his hat under his arm, is walking beside a Turk or Arab who holds a coiling rope leading to the camel's neck spout. On the other side there is a girth holding on the container above, flanked by scrolls. The upper part has panels decorated with a man and woman drinking at a table; the fable of the fox and the crow; a man bowing to a Chinese man holding a parrot; a bird above a tree, and other plants. The top of the cover is decorated with curving stems radiating from the lion knob.
