Description

Fritware, painted in blue and black under a clear glaze

Fritware, wheel thrown, painted in blue and black under a clear, slightly crazed glaze
Shape: hemispherical bowl with plain rim and a low, wide foot ring
Interior: rim is painted black, while on the remainder of the body three decorative friezes are contained with black concentric lines. On the neck a frieze of roughly drawn black cartouche containing black lines and dots are separated by pairs of blue vertical lines. On the body, blue pointed archways, with black triangular fillers, contain vertical panels of Arabic lettering (possibly pseudo-calligraphic) or blue scrolling lines and black dotted irregular shapes. On the base a blue rosette is surrounded by black wavey lines and contains black dotted irregular shapes.
Exterior: the rim is painted black, while on the neck a frieze of blue and black ‘V’ shapes with alternating orientation, are contained within a black concentric lines. Radiating from the lower body, alternating pairs of blue or black lines rise to meet a black concentric line. Glaze covers the lower body and runs unevenly onto the foot
