Earthenware painted underglaze in blue with 'pagoda and fence' pattern
White earthenware, moulded, and painted in blue under very slightly blue lead-glaze. Circular with scalloped shell-moulded edge, gently sloping rim and deep well. Decorated in the middle with an Oriental style building, fences, and stylized trees and bushes beside a lake (a version of 'pagoda and fence' pattern), with groups of three dots in the sky. There is a trellis border round the sides of the well, and the outer edge is blue.

'Pagoda and fence' patterns were produced by several Staffordshire and Yorkshire potters. The plate belongs to an as yet unattributed group of underglaze blue designs,which have clusters of three dots in the background, possibly indicating birds. See Documentation, Roberts, 2006.
