Factory: Unidentified Staffordshire Pottery
Redware with applied reliefs and lead glaze.
Red earthenware with mould-applied white reliefs and covered in a yellowish lead-glaze. The thrown, pear-shaped jug has a projecting ‘sparrow’s beak’ lip and loop handle with oval-shaped lower terminal. The handle has a small hole near the top; this could possibly be from a now lost lid. The white mould-applied reliefs are opposite the handle; the reliefs are a fleur-de-lys is underneath a crown and flanked on the left by a unicorn and on the right by a lion with foliage below.
History note: Provenance unknown before sold to an unknown buyer as Lot 86, Harland sale at Puttick and Simpsons’, 12 October 1923; lot 182, sale at Puttick and Simpsons’, 22 May 1925 bought by Dr J.W.L. Glaisher, FRS, Trinity College, Cambridge
