Description

Cream earthenware, with slightly blue-tinted lead-glaze, painted in enamels with a sheaf of corn and agricultural implements

Cream earthenware with slightly blue-tinted lead-glaze painted in sage green, yellow, orange, dark brown, and black enamels. The mug is cylindrical with a recessed base, and a loop handle of shallow D-section with a longitudinal indentation on either side of its convex middle. On the base there is a central impressed small circle surrounded by a larger circle. On the front, opposite to the handle, there is a large stook of corn with a rake and a scythe projecting from it on the right and left respectively, and below them a sickle and a fork. To the left is an upright rake with a pair of shears below, and an axe above, and further to the left, an upright fork and a pitchfork. On the right of the stook of corn, there is a harrow with a flail above, and a mallet (?), and further to the right, an upright spade and a pitchfork, with above, aa black oval object with a handle. Below the implements there is a narrow brown horizontal band and at the top there is narrow horizontal band and a wider band below the rim. The exterior of the handle is decoration with eleven small heart-shaped motifs with a vertical stroke below.
