Description

Earthenware with sgraffito decoration under lead-glaze

Pale red earthenware, press-moulded, coated with white slip, decorated by the sgraffito technique, sponged or dusted with copper green and manganese-purple oxide colours, which have run into the lead-glaze. The cat is sitting up. Its features, chain collar, and several flowers and floral sprays on its head and body have been incised through the slip, before application of the oxide colours and lead-glaze. Their overall effect is reminiscent of a tortoiseshell cat.
