Potter: Fishley, Robert
Red earthenware, thrown, coated in white slip, with resist decoration under yellow lead-glaze. The jug has a bulbous body, a short and wide neck, with a pinchd lip, and a looped handle with a human mask in relief at the lower end. Natural leaves were stuck on to the shoulder and neck to act as a resist before the slip was applied, resulting in their impressions left in reserve when they were burnt away. Round the lower part is the inscription 'Sarah Gregory's jug Given to her By John Murch, R. Fishley Maker Fremington Pottery Devon. This small jug in friendship take and keep it for the givers sake, John Murch'.
