Description

Cream earthenware figure of a lady streaked in manganese-brown under lead-glaze

Dark cream earthenware, press-moulded, and streaked with manganese oxide colour under lead-glaze. The base is open and the interior is glazed. The standing woman has a headdress with a long veil hanging down her back. She wears a dress with an extremely low-necked bodice which shows her breasts, and is laced over a stomacher. It has elbow length sleeves and is open at the front below the waist to show a long petticoat. She holds up the skirt of the dress in front of her with her left hand, and at the side. with her right hand. The lower edge has an incised zig-zag border.
