Description

Fritware coated in a white glaze painted in blue and lustre

Fritware, wheel thrown, coated in white glaze painted under the glaze with blue and over the glaze with lustre.
Shape: carinated bowl with 'hammer head' rim, sits on a low foot ring
Interior: on the rim an undulating concentric line painted in lustre is framed by a lustre bands. On the body a frieze of palmettes, reserved on a dotted lustre ground, is painted above lustre scrolls which form a wave like pattern. In the roundel an ass with dotted coat prances amongst palmette trees and rosettes, with a bird flying overhead and fish swimming in water below, all reserved on a dotted lustre ground. The ass and sections of the body are splashed with blue or turquoise pigment.
Exterior: the rim is painted with a band of blue. On the neck a pseudo calligraphic band is painted in blue and lustre. On the body plamettes are painted in lustre and are framed by lustre bands.
