Description

Lead-glazed earthenware figure painted in polychrome enamels

Cream earthenware, press-moulded, lead-glazed, and painted in pale blue, two shades of green, flesh-pink, pale red, brown, and black enamels. The underside of the base is open and unglazed apart from a small area near the edge. The figure is supported on a low mound base with a tree stump at the back coloured in shades of green. Diana steps forward on her left leg and has her right knee relaxed. Her head is turned slightly to her right, and she holds a bow by her side with her right hand, and has her left arm raised to take an arrow from her quiver (missing). Her brown hair is dressed in high bun with long tresses falling down over her shoulders at the back. She wears a long white tunic decorated with blue flowerheads and groups of three pale red strokes, and having blue borders around the armholes and neck edge, and a pale red sash. The lower part has a blue lining and is caught up in two places at the front by black ribbons and brooches to reveal her elegant legs. Her bare feet are clad in sandals with black straps.
