Autumn from a set of Seasons
Factory: Unidentified Staffordshire factory
Lead-glazed earthenware painted in polychrome enamels. Autumn represented by a young man holding a bunch of grapes over a goblet of wine
Cream earthenware, press-moulded, covered with slightly blue-tinted lead-glaze, and painted in green, pale yellow, flesh-pink, a little red, pale lilac, brown, reddish-brown, and black enamels. The underside is closed and has a ventilation hole in the centre. The base is square with straight sides canted inwards on the underside, and is decorated on each side with a continuous reddish-brown band. The figure is supported on a mound base which rises up at the back into a tree stump, and is painted in green, brown and reddish-brown to resemble rocks and grass. The boy is barefooted and stands with his right foot a little in in front of the other. He looks downwards to a goblet of wine held in his left hand, and holds a bunch of grapes over it with this right, He has rosy cheeks and black hair, partly covered by a high-crowned black hat with a broad brim which is turned up at the front. He wears a white shirt, a pale lilac jacket, and knee-length pale yellow breeches.
