Description

Fritware, coated in a white glaze painted in polychrome

Fritware, wheel thrown, coated in white glaze painted with red, blue, turquoise, brown, black and flesh tones.
Shape: bi-conical bowl with a plain rim, sits on a low, wide foot ring.
Interior: the rim is painted with a dentailated pattern in blue. On the neck a floriated blue kufic inscription is surrounded by turquoise leaves and red dots. On the body, a frieze of winged sphinx and griffin are painted in polychrome, with each animal separated by a frond dotted with grey and red. On the base arabesques radiate from a central rosette, all painted in blue, red and turquoise.
Exterior: on the upper body, enclosed by two red concentric lines, a black cursive inscription. Glaze covers the surface, terminates unevenly on the lower body.
