Description

Lead-glazed earthenware painted in enamels

White earthenware, press-moulded, lead-glazed, and painted in blue, green, yellow, flesh pink, greyish- pink, red, purple, reddish-brown, pale brown and dark brown enamels. The figure is supported on a shallow square base with a fluted border round its upper part and a flat top decorated with a flower in each corner. The underside of the base is hollow and glazed, and has a ventilation hole in the middle. The winged genius stands on a circular pink plinth. He faces to the front with his feet slightly apart, his left arm hanging down by his side and his right arm cradling a brown torch ? (upper part missing). On top of his head is a bowl-shaped candle socket with a scalloped edge. He has shoulder-length pale pinkish-brown hair, and is nude apart from a white drape decorated with red and blue sprigs and black circles, and lined with yellow, which crosses his body at the front, and hangs down to the ground at the back. His wings are purple. The candle socket is decorated with vertical green pointed leaves and has a red feathered edging. The base has two reddish-brown lines running round its lower part, green fluting, and another reddish-brown line above. Two of the flowers on its top are white and two red with yellow centres.
