Ariadne
Production: Lakin & Poole (Probably)
Lead-glazed earthenware painted in polychrome enamels
White earthenware, moulded, covered with very slightly blue-tinted glaze, and painted in blue, green, turquoise, yellow, flesh-pink, red, brown, and black enamels. The figure is supported on a square straight-sided base, painted in pale blue, yellow and brown to resemble marble, and having on the front a rectangular label inscribed 'ARIADNE'. Its underside is hollow and glazed, and has a ventilation under the figure, and another under the column. Ariadne stands holding with both hands a two-handled basin resting on top of a cylindrical column entwined with a vine. She has pink cheeks, blue eyes, and brown hair dressed in a curly chignon on the back of her head with tresses hanging down from it onto her shoulders. She wears an off the shoulder long white robe scattered with floral sprigs and blue spots, and has a turquoise cloak with a pink lining held on by a blue strap across the front of her body. The bowl has a blue edge and blue dots on its handles, and the vine on the column is painted naturalistically in brown and green.

The base, and the moulding of Ariadne indicate that this figure was probably made by Lakin and Poole of Burslem. Thomas Lakin and John Ellison Poole entered into partnership in 1791, and in 1795 were joined by Poole's brother-in-law, Thomas Shrigley. Thomas Lakin withdrew from the partnership in January 1796 and a year later the other partners were declared bankrupt. During the short period of operation their factory made some exceptionally well-modelled and decorated figures, many of which stood on marbled bases.
