Description

Brown salt-glazed stoneware jug with a bulbous body and cylindrical neck

Grey stoneware, thrown with applied handle, coated with brown iron-wash, and salt-glazed. The jug has a bulbous body standing on a slightly spreading base, a cylindrical neck, and a small angular strap handle. There are turned bands round the base, the junction of the neck and body and below the rim at the top. The salt-glaze is coarse and mottled in varying shades of brown, one side being much darker than the other.

History note: Found in 1911 on Trinity College property in Gifford Place (behind the Blue Boar) on the site of the old Manor House; sold to Mr Morley, 20 Halifax Road, Cambridge; bought from him with another item for £1.10s. in March 1912 by Dr J.W.L. Glaisher, FRS, Trinity College, Cambridge
